How to Clean Your Office for the New Year

The start of a new year should be fresh, and what better a way to start with a clean slate than to have a clean office? Here are some tips for cleaning your office for the New Year.

Things You'll Need

  • Office Supplies
  • Calendar for the New Year
  • Paper Shredder
  • Two Bins

Separate, separate, separate.
Yes, we do live in a digital world, but paper still does exist--and if your office is anything like most - it's in the masses! Good advice is to take one bin for trash and one for recycling. Sometimes you can reuse paper for less prominent things (e.g. printing drafts, jotting down notes), so it's nice to have a pile of already-used paper to give another life. It's an easy way to "green" your business.

Shred, shred, shred.
Sensitive information should never be tossed in the garbage - you just never know who can get their hands on it nowadays. So take all those old credit card offers or anything with your social security number on it, and put it together in a separate pile for shredding. If you're not comfortable with a stranger seeing something, and it poses a potential threat to your identity, it should go in that pile.

Replenish your stash.
Now's a great time to stock up on office supplies and add refills to your office equipment.  Fill up your stapler because its easy to run out of staples, especially when youre in a rush. Get all the supplies you need--paper, scissors, stamps, pushpins, paper clips, file folders - to make sure you don't run out. It's also nice to have things where you need them, especially as you begin a new year.

Sort you office supplies.
If you've acquired tons of business cards throughout the year, now's your time to organize them into your business card holder or simply rubberband them so they're all together.
Display your new calendar. Out with the old - in with the new! If you have to keep last year's calendar for your records, that's OK--but put it out of sight. Put up your new desk or wall calendar, so you can start planning into the New Year!
